The Ageing Process. An exploration of the ageing Self

Date(s) - 01/10/2016
10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Community CPD Workshop – facilitated by Alessandra Merizzi

This event is part of a trilogy of workshops oriented to the exploration of psychological aspects of ageing in a Gestalt Therapy key. The event is open to anyone from any background with an interest in this theme.

This community workshop wants to give you the possibility of reflecting on and exploring how our Self is experienced during the ageing process. Depending on our cultural background and the society we live in, we might define ageing differently and this shapes our way of experiencing it as well. For instance, Western cultures and societies remind us of the negative aspects of getting old, thus we tend to acquire and potentiate false beliefs that undermine our self-esteem that may negatively affect our skills. In this way we start to experience our Self differently too.

How does this happen?

In Gestalt Therapy terms, Self is not a fixed aspect of our identity, it is instead an intersubjective instance, a co-creation that is part of the ongoing interaction between ourselves and the Other/environment. Our values and our cultural and personal constructs play an important role in the co-creation of Self and this may become particularly relevant in the process of ageing.

The aim will be to explore how aspects such as cultural constructs alongside biological definitions, stereotypes, religious attitudes and personal values might influence our experience of the ageing Self.

The workshop will include a theoretical presentation, experiential work and discussion.
