Ageing and ageism in the therapy room. Webinar with Alessandra Merizzi

Since our face-to-face training is disrupted, we are offering online webinars using Zoom.  Each webinar will last 2½ hours, including a 15 minute break.  A presentation on the theme will be followed by smaller group discussions (using Zoom’s Breakout Room facility), followed by a break, then plenary questions and case consultation connected with the theme.  The plenary sessions will be recorded (apart from case consultations), and the recordings are also available to purchase.

Several research studies evidenced the powerful influence of ageing stereotypes on the holistic health of older people (e.g. Dionigi, 2015; Levy, 2003). Ageing stereotypes can be internalised during childhood, can become part of one’s belief system and play an influence that is outside of awareness. In terms of relational dynamics, this influence may occur through the way one perceives the other, the attitude towards them, then becoming part of the co-created relationship.
Beyond one’s passion for working with older people and years of experience, this process may still subtly influence the relationship with an older patient.
This webinar offers a space to explore the stereotypes and myths of ageing, understanding how ageing stereotypes become part of our belief system and affect our relationships.

Alessandra Merizzi, Gestalt Psychotherapist and Clinical Psychologist, has been working for several years with older adults in a variety of settings including the NHS. She published an article entitled “Clinical Supervision in the Context of Older Adult Mental Health NHS Services”. She recently submitted a chapter “Gestalt Therapy and Later Life” for a forthcoming publication. Alessandra has also been running seminars on this theme for the Russian association Psy4Psy.
