I am presenting this event again, as there were many people who didn’t get places when I did it before.
In this event, I want to present my understanding of Husserl’s purpose in his philosophical methodology and how that relates to the theory and practice of Gestalt Therapy. Too often, in my opinion, it has been presented as a variant of Person Centred or Self Psychology approaches, where the therapist brackets their understanding to get a better idea of the client’s understanding, but this does not accord with my reading of Husserl. Rather his aim was to temporarily bracket the content of the experience in order to pay attention to the role of consciousness in ‘constituting’ the experience. This brings his ideas right in line with Fritz Perls’ frequent demand to move away from content and towards awareness.
A second strand of Husserl’s work that is significant for therapy is the question of how my consciousness can present a world that is meaningful and can be shared with others. This is very different to the individualised ‘my phenomenology’ and ‘your phenomenology’ that I often hear talked about.
So I will be sharing my thoughts on these themes, and giving space for discussion.
