Working in the Traumatised Relational Field
facilitated by Miriam Taylor
Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd November 2020, 10am – 5.30pm
now online on Zoom due to coronavirus restrictions. Note also change of time, to allow longer breaks.
This workshop looks at trauma from a relational field perspective, and some of the relational patterns that typically emerge in the therapeutic relationship. These can include some of the most challenging elements of our work as therapists, as well as the most rewarding. We can apply some basic principles of neuroscience not only to trauma clients but also to the therapist and the therapeutic relationship. Firstly, we will make sense of some of the adaptations that reinforce relational difficulties into adulthood, and this thinking will be grounded in interpersonal neurobiology. Secondly, we will examine the push and pull of clients’ relational needs as they present in the therapeutic relationship. Day 1 will close by considering effective interventions to help clients transform their relational wounds.
The first principle of trauma work is the necessity for therapist self-care, and this will be the focus of the second day. Focusing on the resources available to the therapist we will consider how we can increase our resilience so that we can more comfortably bear witness without either dissociating or being pulled into trauma contagion. Effective trauma work involves paying close attention to the therapist’s own history of trauma and caretaking, both of which can emerge in the therapeutic relational dance. Because trauma is fundamentally experienced in the body, it is necessary for both therapist and client to develop body-based resources related to safety, grounding and resilience, and this will be woven throughout the two days.
The number of attendances is limited to 24 which will allow more personal exploration and body work.
A certificate of attendance will be given out after the workshop.
